Those “in the know” in the car industry have made it clear that when it comes to fuel economy, comfort and style, the top three new hybrids are the Toyota Prius, the Ford Fusion, and the Honda Civic.
Starting at just $22,000, the Toyota Prius has a 51/48 mpg fuel economy rating and that means it is the best in its class for keeping that gasoline bill down. Introduced in 1997, the Prius has sold over 1 million cars. It has more trunk space than the other hybrid vehicles, and its crash test ratings are also very respectable.
The car offers airbags not only at the driver and passenger front seats, but side curtain airbags and an airbag to protect the driver’s knees as well. Regardless of factory recalls which are being worked out at no charge to Prius owners, Consumer Reports continues to recommend the Toyota Prius.
The Ford Fusion Hybrid has more power and more room than the traditional hybrid car. With a base price well under $30,000, it also takes the prize for price and value. Motor Trend’s pick for Car of the Year in 2010, the Ford Fusion Hybrid is considered mid-sized yet it still gets 39 mpg.
The Fusion’s power train can run on the battery alone. With a moon roof and deflector and illuminated door-sill plates, the Ford Fusion Hybrid also is considered the most stylish of all the mid-sized hybrids.
The Honda Civic is a small hybrid that gets an amazing 45 mpg. It has the newest technology in transmissions, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that makes a smooth transition through all the gears. There is also an idle-stop feature which shuts off the gas engine while the car is standing, helping to improve gas mileage and making an environmental statement as well.
The Honda Civic offers all the bells and whistles a driver could want including a fuel-consumption indicator, Bluetooth technology, satellite-linked navigation system and USB interface.
